Mauritius, salty outside with the seawater and sweetened inside with the sugar cane plantation is considered to be a real heaven not only for its citizens but also for the tourists who visit this paradise. It is also regarded as an island nation in the Indian Ocean.
Around 1.2 million people are the residents of the country and thus known as the densely populated island. The island is populated by people of Indian, Chinese, African and European origin. The ancestral cultures are preserved and people of every community live in peace and prosperity. Some of the cultures include Hindus, Muslims, Creoles, Chinese and Europeans.
Even if English is the official language of the island, French remains to be the most common language. Religions, cultures and civilization from Europe, Asia and Africa are thus combined to form a harmonious whole. With these features, the island is known to be the most unique place in the world.
Mauritius covers a total of 2,040 square kilometers. The island was formed by the eruption of volcanoes which finally resulted in depositing rocks and lava. The plateau sloped into the sea in the northern part of the island. Even then it drops down to the western and southern slopes. The entire island is surrounded by the coral reefs except the southern portion of the island. The temperature during summer is noted to be about 20 degree Celsius and it lasts from November to April. Rain is introduced into the region by the Southeast winds and at times it is bought about by the cyclones. Temperature during the winter is noted to be almost 22 degree Celsius and exists from June to October.
The major source of the income for the nation comes from sugar industry as the exports are concentrated mainly on sugar and its products. It is also estimated that about one third of the workers farm and process sugar cane. Other crops favored are tea, tobacco, vegetables in between the sugar canes, rice etc. Textile is considered to be yet another prosperous industry in the island.
In the last decades, Mauritius witnessed a massive development. The tourist industry plays a vital role in prosperity of the island. The island is a popular tourism destination for people from around the world. Apart from its physical assets as a tropical island, it is also distinguished by the excellent services available in its hotels, its safe environment, and its diverse cultures.
