Wildlife in Mauritius

The wildlife in Mauritius contains the islands flora and fauna and their usual habitations. The island of Mauritius is situated to the east coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Due to its segregation, Mauritius has a comparatively small variety of wildlife. But, a high percentage of these are widespread species happening to exits only in this region. Several of these species are recently being endangered with extermination because of the human actions which include the introduction of non native species and habitat destruction. Few of them are already destroyed, most legendary the Dodo that initially vanished since the 17th century.

The inhabitant mammalian fauna of this island is restricted to marine mammals and bats. The Rodrigues flying fox and the Mauritius flying fox are among the largest bats widespread in this island. Quite a few mammals that have been brought in include rusa deer, crab-eating macaques, mice, rats, mongooses and tenrecs. There are about 100 bird species that are been recorder recently in this island. There are around seven to eight surviving common species on the main land depending on classification. One of the most common birds found in Mauritius is the Grey white eye Mascarene. Few of the other less common birds are mainly controlled in the Black River Gorges National Park which is situated in the south west of Mauritius.

The Pink Pigeon, Mauritius Parakeet and the Mauritius Kestrel are among the restricted birds seen in the Black River Gorges National Park. Rodrigues fody and Rodrigues warbler are two of the most common species found in the island of Rodrigues. Few of the wide variety of bird species that have been introduced into the island of Mauritius include zebra dove, red-whiskered bulbul, Madagascar fody and common myna. Some of the most common reptiles found in the island of Mauritius are particularly on the Round Island such as the keel scaled boa, night geckos, day geckos and skinks. Giant tortoise which was formerly found in plenty is now found rarely in this region.

There are about 670 inhabitant species of flowering plants found in the island of Mauritius and almost half of them are widespread. Tropical rain forest previously covered most of the island with palm savannah in the regions of dry land and the areas of heath land in the mountain areas. The majority of this natural vegetation has been destroyed and the left over is been endangered by the spread of brought in plants. Trochetia boutoniana which is at present limited to a single mountain is the national flower of Mauritius. Some of the inhabitant trees in the island of Mauritius include Takamaka, Mauritius ebony and various palms. Some of the limited species of plants include Bougainvillea, frangipani and Chinese guava.

The National Parks and Conservation Services and few of the non government organizations like Durrell Wildlife Conservation trust and Mauritian Wildlife Foundation together carry out the conservation process in the country. Several efforts have been undertaken in order conserve the flora and fauna which include the captive breeding, the eradication of limited species and the habitat restoration.
