Climate of Mauritius

For a holiday getaway, Mauritius is one of the most sought of place; the climate of island is generally suitable for every one dwelling in different parts of the world. You can locate it just above the tropic of Capricorn. It is an island in the southern part of Indian Ocean along 57 35 East longitude and 19 68 and 20 15 South latitude. The surface area of the island is 720 square miles and it also has a central plateau which is 400 meters above MSL.

The Tropical climate of Mauritius is warm and dry during winter, from June to September and it is hot, humid and wet during summer, from October to May. The sea temperature ranges from 22 degree Celsius in winter to 32 degree Celsius. Usually the wind constantly blows from all directions.

It feels to be different with the seasonal change. In summer, from November to April, the temperature would be 21 degree Celsius on the coastal area and on the plateau it might be around 23 degree Celsius. Winter commences from May and remains lively till October and the temperature in the coastal region was recorded to be 21 degree Celsius and 17 degree Celsius on the plateau. Daylight shines generally from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. during summer and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the winter.

The coolest climate in Mauritius can be experienced during July with a temperature of 22 degree Celsius and the warmest during February with the Celsius scale measuring 28 degree Celsius.

The showers pour in during January to March. It rains cats and dogs during these months.
These showers are usually known to be short lived during the other months and may just pour for a few minutes and stop.

The warm season sometimes gets visits by passing cyclones. Tropical cyclones do exist, but there is no reason to be alarmed and are known as tropical depressions. Weather does cause damage to the island but it has happened for about twelve times in a span of ninety years.

Some of the cyclones that hit the island are Carol 1960 which was one of the most violent cyclones. The others are the Jenny 1962 and the Gervaise 1975.

The climatic condition of Mauritius is very pleasant. It allows holiday makers a good time all year round.  As the island has only two significant seasons there is very little difference between the temperatures. This is one of the factors that attract people during summers and also during winters.

The climate in the central plateau is little different from the coastal region.  It is a bit cooler in the plateau region as compared to the coastal region. One of the reasons for this is the vivid vegetable present on the plateau region.

It is one of the best places to enjoy the tropical climate.  The time you can spend on the white sandy beaches of Mauritius is wonderful as nobody misses the clear blue sky and the crystal clear water. The lagoons of Mauritius are also something which you should not be skipping off!
