Mauritius Sega

Mauritius is well known for its beautiful and fabulous beaches as well as for the Sega music. The music of Sega is an advanced form of quadrilles and polka from Europe and is merged with local instruments and rhythms. In the modern forms the Music of Sega is merged with varieties of reggae, zouk and soukous. In fact, the music of Sega was invented in the island of Seychelles which later spread rather quickly all through the Indian Ocean. The most traditional and typical folk dance of the island of Mauritius is Sega and the instruments used are Drum, Maravane, Triangle, Rattle and a Ravane. The traditional form of music was mainly unrehearsed and extremely expressive and spoken about the troubles of the conquered and imprisoned people. Sega when combined with Reggae brings out the famous Jamaican music called Seggae.

Right back in the year 1768, several travelers to Mauritius brought the tales of the slaves dancing and singing that appeared to their engrossed eyes so special and different. Several singers like Ti Frere, Cassiya, Clarel Betsy and Serge Lebrasse always used to reflect the slaves passion for music and the sensual dance in their songs. Even Milber, Bernardin de St Pierre and Rousselin captured the tremendous atmosphere of the slaves dancing in their drawings. These people all had heard about the music which was initiating in this island. Instruments such as Ravane, triangle, maravane and bobre were heard al through the island. But eventually as time passed by the original instruments were quickly disappearing and conservative orchestra collection was taking its place.

However there are few areas where the traditional instruments are still being used. The blend of these instruments creates a great sound that causes an unmanageable urge to catch up and dance. Most often several people used to dance without any type of music and were accompanied only by the Ravane, the rattling of seeds in a tin, the clapping of hands and the tinkling of spoons. The Sega dance itself is a rhythmic dance swaying the hips to the exciting beat of the Ravane. This music generally begins with a moderate swaying, and then to the slower solemn harmony that slowly increases overwhelming the dancers and positioning their bodies to jerk, sway and stretch with the classy movements in order to increase the tempo of the beat.
