Savanne is a district situated in the south east region of Mauritius. Souillac is the capital of Savanne. The total population of this city according to the 2000 census is 67000. The total area of Savanne is 243 sq.kms. There are a lot of locales in Savanne those attract tourists. Savanne is one of the most unspoilt parts of the island. An interesting place here is the La Vanille Reserve Des Mascareignes, which is also known as the Crocodile Park. It was named by most of the local people over here. There are several kinds of species of crocodiles that can be found in this park and it also has a rare collection of species of tortoises. This place must be visited by the tourists as well as the local residents. Rum is manufactured in a huge quantity in Savanne.

 

The food that is available in Mauritius is a mix of Indian food, Creole food, Chinese and European food. Cari poule – a chicken curry is a popular dish in Savanne. Apart from this, the other famous dishes are “dholl puri” (That’s a type of bread), “mine-frit” (it’s a Chinese fried noodles) and “nioun nien”. ‘Alouda’ is a drink which is generally preferred by people across the country. It is prepared out of milk and basil seeds. The local music of this place is Sega which was formerly an African genre of music. The main instruments which are used in this type of music are ravane and metallic clicks. These are manufactured out of the goats’ skin. These songs usually describe the loneliness of slavery.  Men usually play the instruments and women perform a wonderful dance in this kind of music. Savanne has some of the best gourment restaurants.

English is the language which is spoken by most of the people from this region. Along with English, they also use French language in the educational system. Most of the people in this city speak French.  Most of the TV programs are in English and American movies are translated into French. The second language which is widely spoken in Savanne is Creole. There are a lot of people in Savanne who speak Hindi. When the French speaking people converse with the people speaking Creole, they generally converse in French.

Most of the Creoles living in Mauritius are Christians. Ages ago some of the Islamic were converted into Creoles.  The language which is followed by the Creoles at home is the Mauritian Creole. There are two temples in Mauritius .One of them is the Shiv Shakti temple and the other one is the Chokklingam Meenakshi temple. The major festivals which are celebrated in Savanne are the Hindu festivals. The Indian festival which is celebrated in the entire country is ‘Mahashivratri’. It means the ‘Shiva’s Great night’. This is celebrated in February and March. The other important festivals which are celebrated in Mauritius are Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali – the festival of lights. The Savanne district is also a mix of those different religions blended together in a peaceful harmony.
