Port Louis is the capital and the largest city & port of the island of Mauritius. It is been situated in the district of Port Louis and its population is about 147,688. The city of Port Louis was initially originated in 1735 by the French sailors as a refreshing stop for their ships that were traveling in the region of the Cape of Good Hope. This city was named in honor of their king Louis fifteenth. The former governor of this city was Count Bertrand François Mahe de La Bourdonnais. The cities main regions include Chinatown, Plaine Verte, Valle Pitot, Ward IV, City centre and Tranqebard

 

The city of Port Louis has preserved several colonial and historical buildings all through out these years. And among them is the reinforcement named La Citadelle or the Fort Adelaide. This Fort Adelaide was initially built in the year 1835 by the British.

 

 

 

 

The city of Port Louis is been bordered by a famous mountain range named Moka Range. Some of the other famous mountain ranges include Pieter Both that stands around 800 meters above the sea level and the Le Pouce. Champ de Mars national derby is the most famous tourist attraction in the city. This national derby is said to be one of the oldest race courses in the entire Indian Ocean and even it the second oldest in the southern Hemisphere. Port Louis waterfront and the Police Barracks famously recognized as Les Casemes are other popular destinations in the city.

 

Port Louis also has an institute named Mauritius Institute which is devoted to the learning of the countries floras and fauna. Signaux Mountain is another famous destination in the city that is a 3 km track which escorts to over 300 meters high. Several citizens climb this mountain and enjoy the scenic view of Port Louis. Some of the other tourist attractions in the city include the old Port Louis theatre, the Port Louis Bazaar and the Caudan Waterfront. The city of Port Louis also has three famous museums such as the Mauritius Stamp Museum, Blue Penny Museum and the Mauritius Natural History Museum. One of the cities oldest and biggest post offices is also located in the Caudan Waterfront region. The place d’Armes which is the main access of Port Louis is situated in the center of the city just near the State Bank Tower.

The city of Port Louis is among the busiest and the most populated city in the island of Mauritius. During the initial hours from 8 am to 5 pm the city is crowded with vehicles and people running up and down the streets of the city. Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam Street is one of the busiest streets in the city. Since the last fifteen years the skyline of this city has entirely changed and the main reason for this is the development of the city. The upcoming of new construction such as the tall sky scaper buildings have boomed the cities development and infrastructure industry. The tallest building in Mauritius is in the city center in Port Louis.
