Mauritius is an island which is densely populated. It has around 1.2 million people. It is a society where people of all religions live peacefully like the Hindus, Muslims, Creoles, Chinese, and Europeans. This feature makes the island a very unique place in the world. Most of the people living in Mauritius are bi-lingual; they can speak French as well as English very fluently. English is an international language, but French and Creole are widely spoken.

               Mauritius is situated in the south-west of the Indian Ocean. It is around 800kms east of Madagascar. In April, June, July, September and October the climate is pleasant.

    • New Year is celebrated on January 1st and 2nd
    • Chinese New Year is celebrated in beginning or middle of February.
    • Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated in mid of February.
    • Mahashivratri is celebrated at end of February.
    • Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated in October.
    • All Saints Day is celebrated on November 1st.

 

Mauritius is the most multicultural island in the Indian Ocean. Mauritius people are proud of this. People mix with all cultures but marriages between people from different religions or cultural backgrounds are not common. Though the French community is small, they are economically important in the island. Mauritius mostly includes slaves and free laborers from Africa .They were the original slaves who first introduced the strong feeling of Sega Dance. Men and women perform this dance which is heard by all age groups. It is the most colorful and energetic dance that is mostly performed for the tourists. The cuisine of Mauritius is a mixture of Indian cuisine, Creole, Chinese and European. The dish which is preferred by most Mauritian is "cari poule" which is a chicken curry. The common drink of Mauritian is "alouda", it is a milk based drink containing herb seeds.
