Pamplemouses is a province situated in the northern region of the island of Mauritius. It is also one of the most densely populated areas of the island. The name Pamplemousses is derived from the French word which means grapefruit. The city of Triolet is the capital of Pamplemousses. Pamplemousses is well renowned for its botanical garden which lies just seven miles north east of Port Louis. The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden is also known as the Jardin Botanique Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam, the name given in honor of the Mauritian first prime minister. It was in 1735 François Mahe de Labourdonnais purchased Mon Plaisir and established a vegetable garden at the left side of the main entrance.

This vegetable garden was established in intension to supply vegetables to his household and to be sold in the city of Port Louis. Later, in the year 1768 it was taken over by Pierre Poivre and it was since then this garden become world renowned as the most remarkable garden in the world. This garden was even used as a nursery for acclimatization & planting of plants of economic and botanical importance. These plants were initially being introduced from East mostly from the countries of Europe.

In the year 1739 when the French East India Company took over the ownership of Mon Plaisir, this garden was sowed with mulberry trees in hope of starting a silkworm industry.

Consequently, the mulberry trees were replaced with the plantation of Bois Noir, a type of charcoal used to produce gunpowder. In the year 1746, Davis was appointed as the Governor of Mauritius and he resided at Le reduit and initially abandoned staying at Mon Plaisir. Since then till 1753, Mon Plaisir was almost abandoned. In 1753, a horticulturist named Fusee-Aublet started a drug house at the Mon Plaisir in order to build a botanical garden. After him came Le Poivre who usually used to phone up his friend Pierre Poivre. In the year 1767, Pierre Poivre was appointed as the Intendant of the island. He then created a nursery for planting and acclimatization of precious clove plants and nutmegs. He also gathered few indigenous plants species and devoted his entire life to create the best garden in the province. Due to the efforts taken by Pierre Poivre, Pamplemousses Botanical Garden became well known as the best garden worldwide.
