Grand Port is a province situated in the south eastern region of the island of Mauritius. Rose Belle and Mahebourg are two important towns in Grand Port, Mahebourg was the former capital of the island of Mauritius and Rose Belle is the capital of Grand Port. Grand Port was initially under the Dutch however French overpowered them and captured Grand Port. The northern region of this province is almost mountainous with rivers and forested valleys. Its eastern region is a plateau where the temperature always remains cool which is suitable for tea plantation. Its southern region is a plain area and is also the site for the International airport.

 

Although no need to worry about cyclones as these tropical cyclones pass near to the island only about four days in a year. During the months of January to March this island experiences heavy rainfall. The sub-tropical climate which is the winter season falls in the months of June to September. Obliviously this is the best time for all the tourists to visit this island as the temperatures are almost cool, dry and warm. The temperatures during this time vary between 13 degrees to 19 degree Celsius. During the nights the temperature some times drops up to 16 and 18 degree Celsius at the coastline.


The Grand Port bay which was inhabited by the Dutch was disembarked in the year 1598 has several interesting places among them include Domaine du Chasseur or Domaine des Grands Bois, Vieux Grand Port and Domaine de lYlang Ylang. Vieux Grand Port is the frame of the Mauritian past as this is the place where the inhabitants first settled on the colonized island of Mauritius. The magnificent bay of Mahebourg has several sites which were initially inhabited by the settlers, However the Dutch decided to settle at Vieux Grand Port in order to build their empire.

Domaine du Chasseur of Domaine des Grands Bois is situated in the hills at the Anse Jonchee Mountain near the city of Mahebourg. This site covers around 2000 acres of land and is situated at an altitude of about 300 to 500 meters high. At this site one can find monkeys, wild boars and deer’s among the luxurious vegetarian of ravenals, eucalyptus, palm trees, wild orchids and ebony. Kestrel, a rare species of bird can also be seen at this site.

 

Le Domaine de Ylang Ylang is situated at the foot of Anse Jochee Mountain near the city of Mahebourg. Its main resources are the Ylang Ylang plantation from the aromatic yellow flowers of which a perfume is being distilled.
