Mauritius is an archipelago which was formed due to several undersea volcanic eruptions. This small island of Mauritius is situated in the northeast of Rodrigues Island. Mauritius has a dramatic landscape of sandy beaches which are protected by coral reefs and wild jagged peaks which is a lush central plateau slanting down to the white sands. The northern region of the island is thrilling compared to the northeastern region. The northwestern coast is full of beautiful sandy beaches which even provide the best idyllic accommodation to al the tourists.

 

In the northeastern coast there are few swimming beaches but it is still worth visiting. The southern coast and the southwestern region are more rugged and also do not have any swimming beaches. The western coast of this island is densely populated as there are quite some famous resorts. These resorts usually provide several entertaining water sports activities to its tourists.

Mauritius is referred to as the playground for several water sports. All the types of water sports is available in the island of Mauritius from sailing, waterskiing, kayaking, parasailing and paddling in the cool and warm waters of Indian Ocean. Most of the resorts in Mauritius offer all these types of water sports while only the non motorized sports are offered for free. Scuba diving and snorkeling are other popular sports which can be enjoyed in Mauritius. People can enjoy and explore the colorful lagoons and reefs with masks and snorkels. Most of the hotels in Mauritius do not charge any penny for the scuba diving and snorkeling equipments. It is always important for new divers to use protective footwear and gloves while diving or snorkeling.

Fishing is another activity mainly enjoyed by all especially when it is done on the western coast of the island. Due to the currents twirl around the coasts of Le Morne it creates an environment for marine attractive to bait fish that literally attract the larger fish. Usually during the months of October to April the fishing season blossoms as one can come across several game fishes like the Shark, Tuna, Wahoo and Sail Fish. Hiking is another such activity enjoyed by many people be it the local residents or the tourists. There are few parks and reserves in the region that attract several people from all over the world. Even peaks like the Le Morne Peninsular is ideal for activities like hiking or trekking.

 

Black River Gorge national Park is one of the most famous and most visited parks in the region. This park was opened in the year 1997 and the main aim to start this park was to preserve the remains of the island’s indigenous tropical forests. This park is not a wildlife wonderland however it is a dense forest and good for those people who want to break from the scenic beaches to these tropical forests. Domaine de Chasseur Nature Reserve and Corps de Garde Mountain Nature Reserve are the two famous natural reserves in Mauritius. Besides these one can even try to book tours to day trips of the island. There are quite a few boat trips to several islands around the main island of Mauritius.
