Government of Mauritius
Republic of Mauritius is an island situated in Indian Ocean about 900 kms east to Madagascar. Mauritius is a parliamentary democratic state which is based on the model of United Kingdom. President of Mauritius is considered to the head of the state and he is been elected for a term of five years by the members of the National Assembly. There are 62 members in the National Assembly where in they are elected through a popular vote between the members appointed to represent ethnic minorities. The Prime Minister of Mauritius and the members of council run the national government of the country. Every five years the government is been elected and most recent election held in Mauritius were on the 3rd of July 2005. These elections were held in all the mainland constituencies and also in the island of Rodriques. These historical elections have always created a tendency to stick on to a system which comprise of two most important coalitions of parties.
Politics in Mauritius has always been characterized and vibrant by the building of alliance and coalition. All the political parties imitate a national harmony which supports independent politics and a comparatively open economy with a tough private sector. The Mauritian Labor Party (MLP) ruled over the country from 1947 till 1982 and again came to power in the year 1995. On 12th of March 1968 as Mauritius received independence Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolam was sworn in as the first Prime Minister of Mauritius. He was the leader of the Mauritian Labor Party (MLP).
The Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM) and the Mauritian Socialist Party (MSP) along with their coalition they won the elections in the year 1982. However, in 1983 the MMM along with the PSM formed a new party named Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) and went on to win the elections. In the year 1995 the Mauritian Labor Party again returned to power but this time with the coalition of MMM. MLP’s Navinchandra Ramgoolam, son of former prime minister was sworn in as the next prime minister. However, in 2000 MMM and MSM in coalition won the elections and formed the government. Sir Anerood Jugnauth was sworn in as the new prime minister. After three years Jugnauth stepped down and gave way to his deputy Paul Raymond Berenger to reside as the next prime minister of Mauritius. One month later Jagnauth was sworn in as the President of the Republic of Mauritius. At present, Sir Anerood Jugnauth resides as the President of Mauritius and Paul Berenger is the Prime Minister of Mauritius.
However, as these political issues carried on Mauritius became republic on 12th of March 1992. The law of Mauritius is a mixture of British and French legal traditions. The highest judicial authority of the country consists of a chief justice, the Supreme Court and five other judges. The local government has nine administrative divisions along with town and municipal councils in districts, urban areas and village councils in the rural areas. The island of Rodrigues forms the countries 10th administrative.
