Mauritius is situated in Southern part if Africa. It is nestled in the Indian Ocean to the east of Madagascar. It lies 20”17 towards South and 57”33 towards East and is known as the most compact nature, in the world. This island has a volcanic origin and is surrounded by coral reefs. Mauritius is eleven times bigger in size when compared to Washington. Coastline in Mauritius stretch to about 177 kilo meters. Continental shelf of Mauritius is 370 kilo meters. The economic zone and the territorial sea are 370 and 22.2 kilo meters.

 

The capital of Mauritius is the Port Luis. Important towns in this port are Curepipe, Vocaos, Phoenix, Quatre Bornes, Beau-Bassin and Rose hill. Climate in Mauritius is tropical type. It is affected by the South East trade winds. Months from May to November are dry and warm. While the months from November to May are hot, humid and wet in nature. Arable land and the population of fishes mainly constitute the natural vegetation of Mauritius. About 200 kilo meters are used for irrigation. 49.26% of land is used for arable purpose, 2.96% of land is used for growing permanent crops , 3% land is used by the pastures and 22% land consist of woodland and the forest.

The environment “harms” faced by Mauritius is water pollution. Coral reefs are also degraded which spoils the environment. Mauritius has international agreements for Climate change, environmental modification, nuclear test ban, law of the sea, marine life conservation, endangered species etc. Danger of cyclone arises in the month of November to April. Anti cyclones occur during the moth from May to September.

 

Population of Mauritius is of 12, 30,602 measured in July 2005. Mauritius constitutes of parliamentary government. It consists of nine districts and three dependencies. Nine districts include Flacq, Grand port, Moka, Plaines Wilhems, Port Louis, Savanne, Rivirie du Rempartand Pamlemousses. Dependicies of Mauritius includes Rodriges, Agalega, Cargados Carajos Shoals.

Mauritius got independence from UK on 12 March 1968. The legal system is based on French Civil law system. For entertaining the judicial matters of the country is consisting of a supreme court.

 

Mauritius forms the part of Mascarene Island. The formation of archipelago is by volcanic eruption which was drifted over reunion hot spot. Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire is the highest peak of Mauritius. It is about 828 meters high. Mauritius is around the central plateau. Mauritius is well known for its natural beauty.

 

The language preferred by the people in Mauritius is English. French is the second language after English. Mauritian Creole is the language mainly spoken by the people in Mauritius. Other language spoken in Mauritius includes Tamil, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, and Punjabi. Chinese dialects are also spoken by the people in Mauritius such as Hakka, Cantonese and Mandarin. Religion followed by the people is Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Roman Catholic and Adventist Protestantism. There are two types of stamps Red penny and Blue penny which are famous in the whole world. It is considered to be most valuable stamps existing.
