Black River Mauritius
Black River is a province situated in the western region of the island of Mauritius. Chamarel colored Earth and Tamarin are among the famous places in the province of Black River. The town of Bambous is the capital of this province however Tamarin was its former capital. Black River is the 3rd largest province in the island of Mauritius however it is the smallest province in the stipulations of population. This area also contains the tropical forest which includes the famous Black River Gorges. Being a driest area in the island of Mauritius it receives hardly any rainfall and so this province has been named as Black River. Due to this feature many fisherman villages have been converted into tourist destinations. Few of the important tourist destinations in this province include Tamarin, Flic en Flac and Le Morne.
Flic en Flac is well known for its beach and it is considered as the longest beach in the island. It is indeed one of the most beautiful beaches in the island as well. Situated on the western coast of the island it offers on of the best views of the sunsets. Tamarin is the site for several sports activities which include surfing. The months of July and August are indeed good for surfing in Tamarin. Le Moren is also one of the most famous places in the province of Black River. It is well known because of its mountainous splendor. It is being said that during the colonial period most of the slaves used this mountainous area as the hideout. This mountainous area is also famous fro wind surfing and kite surfing because it has a unique constant wind which makes all these activities bloom in this area. During the months of May to September the winds are prevailing all through the winter season.
From the Plaine Champagne the highest portion of the central plateau of Mauritius one can view the magnificent Black River Gorges. The Black River Gorges is a park and is spread over 6,574 hectares of area. This park was declared as Nature reserve in the year 1994. It provides as great chance to visitors to enjoy a magnificent hiking experience along with fantastic scenery and even an instance to understand few of the widespread species of bird life and plants. This Black River Gorges has greatly contributed to the renewal of some of the rare widespread bird species such as the Pink pigeon and the Mauritian Kestrel.
This Nature Reserve can be easily reached from most of the places like Curepipe, Mare aux Vacoas and La Marie. Even one can reach this place through walking trails from one of the highest point in the region the Black River Peak which is 828 meters high. Road entrance into the Black River Gorges from the beach street has been improved and presents a Visitor Centre and a camping area as well. The forest clad slopes of the Maccabé Forest and the Black River Gorges close by enclose some interesting varieties of indigenous timber, namely the Ebony, Colophane, Tambalacoque or Tatamala, Bois de Natte and even fine plants peculiar to this island like Trochetia which is the national flower of the island.
