The island of Mauritius is a small tropical island situated in the Indian Ocean. The island of Mauritius is well known for its white sandy beaches and also for its calm lagoons. However, there are few other places of interest in the island which are worth visiting namely Grand Baie, Port Louis, Jardin des Pamplemouusses, Le Morne Peninsula and Domine Less Pailles. Grand Baie is situated on the northern coast of the island where one will find majority of the tourists stationed. This colossal horseshoe shaped bay is creased with restaurants, bars, designer stores and hotels.

 

Grand Baie is the lone resort in the island which offers several independent restaurants and bar. The typical interesting Mauritian activities offered in Grand Baie include diving, water sports, glass bottomed boat trips and snorkeling. Along with these chilling activities most of the tourists just prefer to chill out on the sandy beach watching the local fisherman go about their businesses.

 

Port Louis, the capital city of the island is a commercial center and the working harbor. It is also one of the busiest cities rater noisy in the country. Although there is not much to see in the city, it houses many colonial and historical buildings. The Caudan waterfront in the city of Port Louis is considered to be the main tourist attraction of the city. With trendy restaurants, shops, casinos and cinema halls Caudan Waterfront has become the center of the city. Another interesting place to visit in the city of Port Louis is the city center. It is one of the most memorable places as it offers lots of entertainment to the tourists. The strange smells, jostling crowds and the excitement of haggling will make for most cherished experiences for every tourist.

If there is one thing that can drag every tourist away from the sandy beaches is the Botanical Gardens which is generally known as grapefruit or the Jardin des Pamplemousses. This garden is been named after the grapefruit type which used to grow in this area. Spread over 62 acres of land this garden exhibits quite a few plants more than the grapefruit. The giant Amazon water lilies grown in the huge lily pond and these lilies have leaves which are 11/2 in diameter.

 

Le Morne Brabant is an inaccessible peninsula situated at the southwestern tip of the island. One of its most unique features is the impressive 555 meter basaltic mountain which ascends alone from the centre of Le Morne peninsula. Le Morne is surrounded by a lagoon and is one of the most famous tourist places in Mauritius. During the 17th and the 18th century this place was used as the hide away fro several slaves.

 

Domaine Less Pailles is a nature park and is spread over 3000 acres of land on the foot on a mountain range. This is the place in the island where sugar and rum is being produced. One can come across the traditional way of producing sugar from the freshly crushed sugarcane and even the process of making distilled rum from the sugarcane syrup. There are also quite a few finest restaurants which specialize in Indian, Chinese, French and Creole cuisine.
